Commodity Manager

This position is part of our Sourcing Team and requires a results-oriented mindset and independent thinking. As a key member of Field’s Sourcing Team, you will be responsible for awarding purchasing contracts under agreed terms and conditions, developing strategic partnerships with assigned suppliers, and challenging them to achieve cost reductions, participate in Field’s inventory programs, reduce lead times, and support the quality team in obtaining permanent corrective actions.

The Commodity Manager will provide technical reviews and administrative support, perform quoting activities, conduct commodity reviews, manage key supplier metrics, and handle quote packages. You will also perform data analysis related to sourcing and quoting and negotiate on behalf of Field and our customers to optimize total cost.

This role requires someone who is organized, detail-oriented, a problem solver, driven to grow and expand their role within the company, a strong team player, and capable of working successfully in a cross-functional environment with limited direct supervision. Due to the direct involvement with suppliers, you must be comfortable interacting in meetings and phone calls to both provide and seek vital information.

Essential Functions:

  • Commit to FIELD’s Mission Statement, Core Values, and Fieldamentals.
  • Manage the sourcing process for assigned commodities, in the range of $5MM-$30MM.
  • Provide commodity analysis and strategy recommendations based on market knowledge.
  • Works directly with suppliers on quotations utilizing the Q-Strat quoting software. Make sourcing recommendations in a timely manner based on Field Fastener strategy.
  • Negotiate with vendors to obtain optimal products, terms, and pricing.
  • Monitors and measures supplier performance through supplier Business Reviews and supplier visits.
  • Research and qualify new suppliers as required.
  • Manage multiple projects at once by prioritizing, setting deadlines, and coordinating the flow of information internally and externally.
  • Utilize various computer applications for database management, report generation and tracking spreadsheets.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between internal and external partners in coordination with management.
  • Interface with Sourcing, New Customer Implementations, Account Management, Quality, Engineering, and Sales to provide expertise designed to achieve maximum supply chain efficiency.

Education, Skills and Experience Required:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Polite and professional manner.
  • Mechanical aptitude that can be applied to the technical requirements of this position.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in a related role required. 
  • Experience successfully managing multiple projects and always tracking their status.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced, team-based environment.
  • Strong communication skills for interacting with internal team members and external suppliers both domestically and internationally.
  • Good comprehension skills.
  • Capable of strategically analyzing and interpreting data.
  • Willing and motivated to develop skills to take on additional responsibilities.
  • The ability to work a flexible schedule in order to accommodate large projects.
  • Sound business decision making ability.

  • Basic blueprint reading ability and interpretation.

  • Strong Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook knowledge.

Additional Skills Preferred:

  • College degree in business, supply chain, economics, finance or related area; relevant experience equal to a four-year degree will be considered.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years business-related knowledge and experience in sourcing or supplier development.
  • Negotiating experience and/or knowledge of negotiating techniques.
  • Experience creating/evaluating quotations and supplier management.
  • An understanding of LEAN principles
